Bred by Colman O’Flynn, Denman was born in County Cork in Ireland on April 17, 2000 - already a large foal, Denman would grow to be 17.2hh.
He was a uniquely coloured liver chestnut.
After failing to sell at the 2004 Tattersalls Derby Ireland Sale, Denman was sent into training with Adrian Maguire and duly won his Liscarroll point-to-point by 12 lengths.
He was subsequently purchased to race for Harry Findlay and Paul Barber, the landlord of his soon-to-be trainer Paul Nicholls.
As a five-year-old, Denman won his first race in the October of 2005.
Sent off the 5-6 favourite, Denman won under Christian Williams, despite hanging in the closing stages. He would win his next three races, including the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle.
Sent off the 11-10 favourite, Denman was expected to extend his unbeaten record in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham, but he was too keen and was outpaced on the drying ground by Nicanor. His rider Ruby Walsh blamed himself and said he should have enforced more positive tactics.
Although a talented hurdler, it was over fences which Denman would really excel. He won his first four starts over fences and gained a first Cheltenham Festival win when making mincemeat of his rivals in the 2007 RSA Chase.
Denman enjoyed a dream start to the 2007-2008 season when bolting up in the Hennessy Gold Cup off topweight.
Wins in the Lexus and Aon Chase followed before he met stablemate and the previous year’s winner Kauto Star in the Gold Cup. The contest was subbed as a 'clash of the titans' and received mass media coverage.
Under Sam Thomas, Denman silenced the doubters with one of the most destructive performances in horseracing history, making most and pulverising his rivals into submission. Kauto Star and Neptune Collonges were left trailing in his wake, seven lengths behind. It was this performance that helped christen the gelding “The Tank”.
“Denman was awesome. He galloped, jumped, never put a foot wrong. He got Kauto Star on the back foot. Kauto never jumped as well as he normally does and Denman ran a career best. The pressure was on this time to get a one-two-three and it doesn't get any better than this. I knew Denman had won with a circuit to go.” - Paul Nicholls
In September 2008, Paul Nicholls revealed Denman had been treated for an irregular heartbeat. Comprehensively beaten on his first start back at Kempton, Denman didn’t face again until the 2009 Gold Cup, where he produced a mammoth effort to be second to Kauto Star.
After falling on his final start of that season, Denman roared back to his glorious best with a commanding win in the 2009 Hennessy Gold Cup - again carrying topweight - to win off a mark of 174. What A Friend made it a one-two for Paul Nicholls.

Second in the next two Gold Cups to Imperial Commander and Long Run, Denman was retired after sustaining a minor injury in December 2011. He spent his retirement team-chasing with Charlotte Alexander and later lived out his final years with his part-owner Paul Barber. He was euthanized due to problems caused by his old age on June 5, 2018. He was 18 years old.
The Aon Chase was renamed the Denman Chase in 2012.
Newbury unveiled a unique iron gate which commemorated Denman's achievements in 2019.
